We are looking for a PhD candidate to join our Machine Learning team to research and develop technologies for future practical application. In order to determine the research focus and elaborate on it scientifically, we cooperate with Professor Dr. Ralf Herbrich, head of the Chair for Artificial Intelligence and Sustainability at the Hasso Plattner Institute in Potsdam and a leading voice in the field.<\/p>\n
As computational resources have continued to grow in recent years, computationally expensive algorithms such as artificial neural networks (ANNs) finally became easily and feasibly trainable. This inspired a lot of research to solve different applied ML-problems especially in the field of image understanding (e.g. classification, object detection, image- & instance segmentation).<\/p>\n
However, most of the research focuses predominantly on predictive accuracy. While there are breathtaking success stories with regards to this metric, it is often not practical to have an ANN which excels at an everyday activity because several hours of processing on a supercomputer are needed to achieve the task, and evenduring prediction significant amounts of computation are required.<\/p>\n
We follow a different approach. Our ANNs are highly energy-efficient and real-time capable on everyday hardware such as smartphones. Building on existing capacities, Peregrine PhD students shall develop cutting-edge scientific research and contribute new algorithmic results to further enhance the energy-efficiency of machine learning algorithms, including ANN training and prediction.<\/p>\n
